New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day-long hunger strike on Friday morning. The central government had assured him of action regarding key demands linked to student protests. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in a late-night video that the government would introduce a new bill containing stringent provisions against exam paper leaks. This proposed legislation includes provisions for fast-track courts and severe penalties for the guilty. The Union Cabinet is set to discuss the bill on Friday before it is tabled in Parliament next week.
Wangchuk Ends 26-day Hunger Strike
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his indefinite hunger strike shortly after midnight at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. He stated that the decision was taken following extensive discussions with the government and “in view of potential violence in the country.”
Sonam Wangchuk posted on X, “I have finally broken my fast after 26 days in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, along with senior leaders of the Apex Body of Leh-Ladakh. Before this, 65 MPs from various political parties had either met me or written letters urging me to end the fast. This decision was reached after lengthy discussions regarding various conditions and considering the potential for violence in the country. I also urge all of you not to let any form of violence occur anywhere and to remain very vigilant.”
After Wangchuk’s announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him a quick recovery, stating, “I request Sonam-ji to listen to the doctors’ advice about his routine and recover as soon as possible. I pray to God for Sonam-ji’s well-being.”
Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijit Dipke expressed relief at Wangchuk ending his hunger strike but stated that the protests would continue. “We are relieved and grateful that Sonam Sir has ended his hunger strike after 26 days. Sir, thank you for your extraordinary courage and sacrifice. By risking your life, you awakened the conscience of the entire nation. Your life is invaluable to this country. The peaceful protest by the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ at Jantar Mantar will continue until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns,” he said on X.
