THE World University Rankings 2027: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has secured the top spot in India and ranked 254th globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027. This latest edition includes 2,297 universities from 118 countries and regions, making it the largest edition of the rankings to date, according to THE.
India continues to be the most represented nation in Asia for the second year in a row, with 143 universities making the list, an increase of 15 compared to last year. It is followed by Turkey, with 124 universities included; Turkey also added 15 more institutions to the rankings this year.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) achieved an overall score of 57.0 in the 2027 rankings. Among the specific indicators, its strongest score was 98.0 in ‘Research Environment,’ while it scored 62.1 in ‘Teaching’ and 58.6 in ‘Research Quality.’
Following IISc on the Indian list was the ‘Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences,’ placed in the 326-350 band with an overall score between 52.3 and 53.3. Shoolini University was placed in the 451-500 band, while Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University were both placed in the 501-550 band.

These five institutions form part of India’s broad representation in the global rankings, featuring a total of 143 Indian universities. This year, over 1,000 institutions from Asia have been ranked. This number has increased from 929 last year to 1,003 this year. Here is how Indian institutions performed in the latest rankings:

The 2027 World University Rankings reveal a strong presence of Asian universities at the top of the global list. According to THE, Asia has surpassed continental Europe for the first time, with China’s Tsinghua University overtaking Switzerland’s ETH Zurich to reach the 11th spot. Tsinghua is now Asia’s top-ranked university, while Peking University holds the 13th position.
Additionally, the National University of Singapore (NUS) has entered the global top 15, marking the first time three Asian universities have featured in this tier. There are 40 Asian universities in the global top 200, an increase of five from last year, while Malaysia has entered the top 200 for the first time. The University of Tokyo is Japan’s top university at 27th place, while the University of Hong Kong holds the top spot for Hong Kong at 33rd place.
Seoul National University is South Korea’s leading university, ranked 56th. Overall, the University of Oxford has retained the top spot for the 11th consecutive year, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place. Princeton University and Stanford University are tied for third place, while the University of Cambridge ranks fifth.
Times Higher Education (THE) evaluates research-intensive universities across areas such as teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement.
