The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) is partnering with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury to open its first academic sub-campus in the United States.
Two institutions (IIT Bombay and State University of New York) signed a ‘Letter of Intent’ on Friday at the SUNY Old Westbury campus on Long Island, New York, aiming to develop new academic programs and research opportunities in science and engineering. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury President Dr. Timothy E. Sams signed the agreement, witnessed by Binay Pradhan, the Consul General of India in New York.

Together, the institutions will develop undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs, while promoting joint research, faculty exchanges, and academic conferences.
Describing this as a major milestone in India-US academic relations, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that this partnership will improve India’s research culture, create new opportunities for students and scholars, and strengthen knowledge sharing between the two countries.

As per SUNY Old Westbury, this collaboration will commence with the exchange of faculty and researchers, joint research projects, and academic events, eventually incorporating new degree programs. Professor Kedare said, “IIT Bombay is excited to collaborate with SUNY Old Westbury, an institution led by a team committed to quality education and a forward-looking vision.” He added that the complementary strengths of both institutions would propel this partnership to new heights.
Dr. Timothy E. Sams, President of SUNY Old Westbury, stated that the university aims to establish a “strong IIT Bombay presence” on its campus, enabling students to benefit from joint teaching and research in fields like physics and engineering, and to emerge as future global leaders.
The announcement event was attended virtually by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi, and India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra. Officials called this initiative a crucial milestone in the strengthening of the India-US partnership regarding higher education and research.
IIT Bombay’s first academic sub-campus in the United States is the IIT Bombay-SUNY Old Westbury initiative. This move is part of a wider endeavour by Indian institutions to enhance their international presence via collaborations.
