After NEET Counselling 3,744 PG Medical Seats Remained Vacant: Health Minister

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has 49,790 PG seats out of which 30,384 are in government medical colleges and 19,406 are in private medical colleges.

NEET Counselling: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that out of 60,202 postgraduate (PG) medical seats available for 2021-2022, 3,744 remained vacant after the NEET counselling. Besides, out of 92,065 undergraduate seats available in 2021-2022, 197 seats were left vacant for MBBS courses after counselling, the minister said in response to a question.

National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts NEET UG every year. In 2021, around 15,44,273 students appeared for the exam while in 2022 a total of 17,64,571 students appeared for the exam.

In reply to another question raised in the Rajya Sabha, Minister Bharti Praveen Pawar said that there are a total of 96,077 MBBS seats available in the country, out of which 51,712 are in government medical colleges and 44,365 are in private medical colleges. NEET Counselling Diplomate of National Board:

Diplomate of National Board (DNB)/Fellowship of National Board (FNB) also has 12,648 PG seats, of which 4185 are in government institutions and 8463 are in private institutions. Apart from this, the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) has 1621 PG seats.

Medical colleges have increased from 387 before 2014 to 648 now, an increase of 67 per cent.

Diplomate of National Board (DNB)

Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is a Post-graduate Master’s degree same as MD/MS degree awarded to the Specialist Doctors in India after completion of three year residency. DNB courses are run and the degrees are awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), New Delhi, an autonomous academic body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India on successful completion of their postgraduate residency. People who completed an MD/MS program in their respective subjects are also eligible to appear in the final DNB certification exam along with regular DNB trainees.

Doctorate of National Board (DrNB) is a post MD/MS/DNB super speciality degree awarded by NBE. It is equivalent to Doctorate of Medicine (DM) Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) degrees awarded respectively in medical and surgical super specialities.

In 1975, the Government of India established the National Board of Examinations, an autonomous organisation Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the prime objective of conducting postgraduate and postdoctoral courses of high and uniform national standard in various disciplines of modern medicine and allied sciences on an All-India single point entrance basis.

The Board conducts its postgraduate and postdoctoral programmes in reputed government, trust and private teaching hospitals at various cities and towns after accreditation by the board and in medical colleges accredited by the Medical Council of India.
