NEET PG 2023 Cut-Off Percentile Reduced to Zero
According to an update issued by the government on Thursday afternoon, the qualifying percentile for post graduate courses has now been reduced from 50th percentile and above to zero.
NEET PG 2023 : A doctor who scores zero in Post Graduate NEET can get a seat in Post Graduate Medical programs in India. For the first time, the Health Ministry has made it possible for all NEET aspirants to be eligible for postgraduate seats – including those who have scored less than minus 40 marks.
According to an update issued by the government on Thursday afternoon, the qualifying percentile for post graduate courses has now been reduced from 50th percentile and above to zero.
National Eligibility Entrance Test Postgraduate or NEET PG is an qualifying and ranking test in India for students who wish to study various doctoral postgraduate and diploma courses in government or private medical colleges in the country. The examination is conducted by the National Board of Examinations. Counseling and seat allotment is conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services.
What has actually changed?
Till Thursday, general category candidates were required to score 50 per cent or more marks to qualify for NEET PG 2023 counselling. In more simple terms, this meant that aspiring medical students needed to score better than 50% of the total candidates. After qualifying, they can choose seats in various departments based on their cutoff score and availability of seats.
The relaxation now makes students with zero percentile – individuals who have not scored any marks in the exam – eligible for postgraduate courses.
How will the changes affect candidates?
A greater number of candidates are now eligible for seats – which in turn will ensure that most of the seats are filled. However, this will make things difficult for applicants who were waiting for allotment of seats in Round 3 and will also create a hindrance for those waiting for an upgrade in seat allotment.
While the move has been welcomed by some, others including medical bodies and politicians have described it as ‘a mockery of the health care system’. The decision by the Union Health Ministry comes after doctors across the country demanded reduction in the NEET-PG 2023 cut-off criteria.
