Semiconductor Courses: In a new collaboration with Tata Electronics, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is set to launch diploma-level training and BTech-level engineering programs focused on Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP). These courses will incorporate practical, hands-on training designed to prepare students for careers in the semiconductor industry.

In an official statement, the institute announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics to establish a ‘Centre of Excellence’ (CoE) on its campus. This centre will focus on education, skill development, and research in the field of semiconductor packaging. Through this partnership, students from engineering colleges, polytechnics, and other educational institutions across Assam and the Northeast region will also be provided with training opportunities.

What will the Semiconductor Courses Entail?

IIT Guwahati will be responsible for developing and conducting these educational programs, with course content and specialised training modules created in collaboration with Tata Electronics. The programs will combine classroom instruction with practical training in semiconductor ATMP, a process that encompasses the assembly, packaging, testing, and marking of semiconductor chips.

As part of this initiative, engineering colleges, universities, and polytechnics will be identified to participate. Students from these institutions will gain access to practical training, while faculty members will receive training to help them enhance semiconductor-related education at their respective institutions.

Students will also have the opportunity to undergo training at Tata Electronics. Undergraduate and postgraduate students will be able to participate in joint research projects focused on semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing, and related technologies.

The proposed ‘Centre of Excellence’ will serve as the primary hub for academic and research activities conducted under this partnership. According to IIT Guwahati, the objective is to align technical education with industry requirements and expand access to specialized semiconductor training beyond the confines of the institution.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to develop a skilled workforce for India’s semiconductor industry. By involving engineering colleges and polytechnics across the region, the partnership also aims to build a robust talent pipeline in Assam and the Northeast.

What is a Semiconductor?

A semiconductor is a material whose electrical conductivity falls between that of a conductor (such as copper, through which electricity flows easily) and an insulator (such as rubber or glass, which block the flow of electricity).
It is precisely this intermediate nature that makes them so valuable.

By applying a small amount of external energy, such as voltage, heat, or light, you can turn the flow of electricity on or off, much like a tiny ‘light switch.’ This precise control serves as the mathematical and physical foundation for all modern digital computing.
