GMC Srinagar: An official stated on Friday that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats at Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar. According to an official spokesperson, the total number of MBBS UG seats at Government Medical College Srinagar will increase from 200 to 250, starting from the academic year 2026-27.
He mentioned that the Department of Health and Medical Education has announced the NMC’s approval to increase the annual intake capacity at Government Medical College Srinagar, a move aimed at strengthening medical education and the healthcare delivery system in Jammu and Kashmir.
He further stated that the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC has issued a ‘Letter of Permission’ (LoP) under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, approving the addition of 50 MBBS seats.

The spokesperson noted that Government Medical College Srinagar had received approval for 20 additional seats last year. He added that the decision to increase seats at the medical college was taken following a thorough review by the MARB in accordance with the provisions of the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR), 2023. The spokesperson remarked that this increase in seats has further solidified Government Medical College Srinagar’s status as one of the country’s premier medical colleges.
