IIT Kanpur launches departments of design, space science and astronomy.
The Department of Design is a greatly expanded approach to the existing design program and the Department of Space Science and Astronomy will cater to a broader field of space, planetary, astronomical science and engineering.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kanpur) has approved the establishment of two new departments in the fields of design, space science and astronomy, taking the total to 20 academic departments.
The Institute’s Design Program, which has been in existence since 2002, will be transformed into the Department of Design. The institute also plans to launch a Bachelor of Design program in early 2023.
The Department of Design will be headed by Professor Nachiketa Tiwari, the current Head of the Design Programme. It will have a design cell to meet the needs of the industry in the areas of new product concept and development, product design, engineering design, branding, user experience and packaging.
The Department of Space Science and Astronomy will be devoted to the broad field of space, planetary, astronomy and engineering.
The institute claims that it is one of the first departments of its kind in India to bring together engineers, astronomers, astrophysicists and planetary scientists to meet the growing need for education, training and research in some important areas of research. Both undergraduate and graduate degree programs (Masters and PhD) will be offered by the newly established department.
