Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant said on Friday that his comments made in the courtroom during the hearing of petitions related to the CJP protests were “misrepresented.” He emphasised that the Supreme Court is “open 24×7 for every justice-seeker” and never refuses to hear any properly filed case.
Speaking at a UNCITRAL conference, the CJI noted that his courtroom remarks had been “misrepresented” and stressed that the Supreme Court responds to every properly filed petition, regardless of the nature of the case.
The CJI Surya Kant said, “My words have been misrepresented in the media.”
Emphasising access to the Supreme Court, he stated, “The Supreme Court is open 24×7 for anyone seeking justice. Anyone with a grievance is welcome, but they must follow the prescribed format and the established procedure for filing petitions in the Supreme Court.”
Referring to petitions linked to the ongoing protests, the Chief Justice of India mentioned that the matters brought before the court on Friday had already been listed for hearing. Chief Justice of India said, “The petitions mentioned today will be heard on Monday.”
The CJI stated that two petitions filed on Friday were listed immediately after being mentioned before the court. He explained that cases are listed automatically once procedural deficiencies are rectified. CJI added, “If a matter is extremely urgent, I consider such requests.” The controversy arose on Wednesday following the CJI’s remarks, in which he declined a request for an urgent hearing on a petition seeking Supreme Court intervention regarding police action against student protesters staging a sit-in (dharna) for the CJP.
