Telangana Life Sciences, BITS Pilani, and Australia’s RMIT University have collaborated to launch industry-integrated PhD courses and a research program. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between industry and academia and strengthen research-based innovation within the life sciences sector.
By combining academic knowledge with industry insights, the partnership seeks to accelerate the application of research, enhance workforce capabilities, and contribute to economic and social outcomes in both India and Australia.
Although the state has emerged as a premier destination for life sciences manufacturing and Global Capability Centers (GCCs), a gap persists between academic research and industry requirements. According to a press release, bridging this gap is crucial for accelerating innovation and bolstering Telangana’s competitiveness during the next phase of the life sciences sector’s growth.
Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu highlighted the immense potential of this opportunity, noting that India invests significantly less in research compared to China (less than a quarter) and the US (less than one-fifth). He stated that through these industry-integrated PhD courses, the Telangana government is bringing academia and industry together to cultivate research talent and an innovation ecosystem, thereby establishing Hyderabad as a global hub for life sciences R&D.
