Film and Television Institute of India Pune and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute Granted University Status

This new status enables these institutes to award degrees instead of just diplomas and to launch doctoral programmes, thereby enhancing their academic offerings and recognition in the field of film education.

Film and Television Institute of India Pune: The Ministry of Education has granted deemed-to-be university status to two prestigious film schools of India. These two institutes are Film and Television Institute of India Pune (FTII Pune) and the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute Kolkata (SRFTI Kolkata).

This new status enables these institutes to award degrees instead of just diplomas and to launch doctoral programmes, thereby enhancing their academic offerings and recognition in the field of film education.

Both institutes are eligible to introduce doctoral, research, and innovative academic programs. Institutions will participate in the NIRF Rankings and collaborate with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). This significant initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, fostering increased autonomy, innovation, and academic excellence in the fields of film and media education, as noted by the official.

The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune was founded by the Government of India in 1960, located within the historic Prabhat Studios. Originally named the ‘Film Institute of India,’ it functioned as a division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
