President Trump Warns Nations: Days after the United States Supreme Court struck down his global tariffs, President Trump warned countries not to withdraw from recent trade agreements with the United States, saying any attempts to “play games” would be severely punished.
President Donald Trump warned that countries considering withdrawing from trade agreements with the United States could face economic consequences.
In a strong statement, Trump said that countries should not “play games” by withdrawing from deals after benefiting from access to the United States market. He hinted that tariffs or other trade penalties could be imposed if the agreement is not honoured.
This reflects Trump’s long-standing hardline stance on international trade, which is focused on protecting American industries and reducing trade imbalances.
United States Trade Deals: Supreme Court Invalidated his Earlier Action
In several posts on Monday, Trump made clear that he would focus on other trade laws to maintain tariff pressure. Although the Supreme Court invalidated his earlier action under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), Trump argued that the decision left the door open for more stringent action.
This warning comes at a time when markets are nervous about the uncertainty surrounding the administration’s next steps. On February 20, Trump announced a temporary 10% import duty under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, but the next day increased it to 15% – the maximum allowed under the law.
Meanwhile, in Brussels, the European Parliament postponed a vote on the EU’s trade deal with the US after Trump imposed temporary duties. Under the proposed arrangement, EU goods would be subject to a 15% United States tariff, exempting hundreds of food items, aircraft parts, essential minerals, and pharmaceutical ingredients, while the EU would remove duties on several United States industrial goods.
