The total number of MD, MS, and diploma seats has risen to approximately 58,000, marking an 11 percent increase compared to the 52,173 seats available last year. There has been a 32 percent increase in seats across private and deemed universities, while government medical colleges have seen a 10 percent rise.
Specialities such as Anaesthesia, Ophthalmology, ENT, Pathology, Psychiatry, and Respiratory Medicine have also seen an overall increase in seats for the 2026-27 academic year.
In its official notice, the Commission stated that the seat matrix may be modified if necessary, based on decisions made by the appeal committee or any other competent authority.

The NMC further clarified that the current seat matrix does not include seats for which applications have been received to increase intake in existing PG courses or to start new PG courses.
Any additional PG seats or courses approved subsequently will be included in an updated seat matrix and published on the National Medical Commission’s official website.
All medical colleges have been instructed to ensure that admissions are conducted strictly based on the number of approved seats. The seat matrix includes details regarding medical colleges and institutions, as well as information on the approved PG courses and annual intake capacity for participation in the 2026-27 academic year counselling.
The notice further states that if any counselling committee identifies discrepancies or inconsistencies in the recently released seat matrix, the matter must be immediately referred to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) for clarification.
The concerned medical colleges, institutions, and counselling committees must ensure strict adherence to the approved seat matrix and all applicable guidelines, rules, and conditions stipulated by the National Medical Commission and the MARB.
