New Recruitment for Reforms: Following the NEET-UG paper leak and amidst widespread protests, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has terminated the services of 47 officials. The NTA is an autonomous nodal body responsible for conducting entrance examinations for higher education institutions.
Sources indicated that the agency would also initiate “legal and criminal action” against these officials to send a “strong message.” According to sources, these are “merely initial steps” toward improving the agency’s functioning, and “several more stringent and reform-oriented measures” could follow.
Signaling Major Reforms Within the NTA
Signaling major reforms within the NTA, the Ministry of Education stated in a separate announcement that it has issued advertisements to recruit senior professionals at the General Manager level. These officials will oversee key functions such as the network of test centers, operations, information security, and vigilance.
The Ministry also stated that it would recruit 16 young professionals across various NTA units through the Union Public Service Commission’s (UPSC) ‘Pratibha Setu’ portal.
This portal is a government initiative that allows “verified employers, including ministries, PSUs, autonomous bodies, and private organisations, to view the details of aspiring candidates who cleared all stages of UPSC examinations but failed to make it to the final merit list.”
The Ministry of Education described these appointments as the “first concrete step towards the institutional restructuring of the NTA.” This restructuring is being carried out based on the recommendations of a high-level expert committee headed by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan. According to the Ministry of Education, notifications have been issued for four contract-based General Manager positions, each with an initial tenure of three years, covering the following areas:
Test Center Network and Operations; Information Security; Vigilance, Investigation, and Forensics; and Assessment Research & Development and Psychometrics. The General Manager (Test Centre Network and Operations) will lead the NTA’s nationwide test-centre network, which spans over 500 cities and select international centres.
