Classes for the inaugural MBA batch commenced on Tuesday at IIM Guwahati’s transit campus in Kamrup district. This first batch comprises 52 students hailing from 18 states. The institute initiated academic activities from its transit campus located at Tech City, Bongra, under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad.
It will eventually shift to its permanent campus, currently under construction on 574 bighas of land across the villages of Morabhita and Dighalkuchi in Kamrup district; the project is expected to be completed within three years.

Speaking at the commencement of classes, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the launch of the MBA program marks IIM Guwahati’s entry as a proud member of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management network, opening up new opportunities for the region’s youth.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Chief Minister noted that the number of IIMs in the country has risen from 13 in 2014 to 22, thereby extending access to high-quality management education to a wider population. He explained that the state government established the transit campus to enable the commencement of academic activities without waiting for the permanent campus to be completed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated IIM-Guwahati’s academic journey on February 14, 2026, by launching its Executive Education Program. Sarma highlighted that the institute successfully launched its flagship MBA program within just five months.
He remarked that the establishment of IIM Guwahati, the 22nd IIM in the country and the second in the North-East, demonstrates the Central Government’s resolve to expand institutions of national importance within the region.
He urged all stakeholders to foster a competitive academic ecosystem so that, in the coming years, students from the state could secure at least 50 percent of the seats in the premier national institutions located in Assam. Earlier in the day, Sarma inaugurated the Centre of Excellence for Digital Design and 3D Printing at Tech City, Bongara. Developed at a cost of ₹53.84 crore under the PM-DeVINE scheme, this facility has been implemented by AMTRON in collaboration with the North Eastern Council.
It will serve as a regional common resource centre, featuring a hub in Guwahati and 10 spokes across the North-East. He also laid the foundation stone for the Integrated Office Building of the Co-District Commissioner at Palashbari.
