Ahead of the NEET UG results, the National Medical Commission (NMC) today released the seat matrix for the undergraduate MBBS course for the 2026-27 academic year. ‘Institutes of National Importance‘ (INIs) have not been included in this list. According to the notice, a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats will be available across 823 medical colleges in the country this year.
This seat matrix was issued by the National Medical Commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) via a notice dated July 14, 2026, and subsequently shared with all medical colleges and the Medical Counselling Committee (DGHS).
Of the total 1,36,939 seats, 1,27,028 are renewed from existing intake capacities, while 9,911 are newly added seats. The National Medical Commission stated that this includes 2,400 MBBS seats across 25 newly opened medical colleges, comprising 400 seats in 7 new government medical colleges and 2,000 seats in 18 new private medical colleges.

There are 441 government medical college institutions with a total of 63,296 seats (61,185 renewed and 2,111 added), while private medical colleges comprise 382 institutions with a total of 73,643 seats (65,843 renewed and 7,800 added).
In terms of states, Karnataka has the highest number of seats at 15,395 across 75 medical colleges; this is followed by Tamil Nadu with 13,999 seats across 78 colleges and Uttar Pradesh with 14,000 seats across 88 colleges. Maharashtra has 13,099 seats across 86 colleges, while Telangana has 10,250 seats across 66 colleges.

The MARB has directed all private medical colleges approved to open new MBBS colleges or increase their seat intake to submit the requisite electronic bank guarantee (E-Bank Guarantee) to the Director, MARB, within seven days of the public notice’s issuance.
Details regarding the E-Bank Guarantee must be submitted via email to bgugmarb@nmc.org.in and pratap.ram@nic.in. The MARB will issue the ‘Letter of Permission’ (LoP) only after the required E-Bank Guarantee is received and verified as valid.
The notice states that the attached seat matrix is subject to modification, if necessary, based on decisions made by the appellate committee or any other competent authority. We will upload any revised seat matrix to the official National Medical Commission (NMC) website, and the counselling committees of the Central Government and the respective State Governments will use it for counselling and admissions.
If a counselling committee identifies any discrepancy or inconsistency in the approved seat matrix, the matter must be referred to the MARB for clarification.
