Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi (JNU Delhi) has said that “disciplinary action, including immediate suspension, expulsion, and permanent debarment from the university,” will be taken against students found raising objectionable slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) and Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday night.

The statement comes after the university sought to register an FIR in connection with the incident.

What Happened at JNU Delhi

According to a letter written by the university’s security department to the Vasant Kunj (North) police, students “associated with JNUSU” had organized an event titled “A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba” to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the 2020 violence.

According to the letter, about 30-35 students, including four JNUSU members, gathered for the event held around 10 pm on January 5, the same day the Supreme Court denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the North-East Delhi riots case. While the gathering initially “appeared to be limited to commemorating the said anniversary,” its nature and tone changed considerably.

The Supreme Court rejected the bail pleas of Khalid and Imam, citing the “hierarchy of participation” in the 2020 North-East Delhi riots case.

What JNU Delhi Administration said

The university wrote on its X handle, “The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration has pledged to take the strictest possible action against students found raising objectionable slogans against the Honourable Prime Minister and the Honourable Home Minister… Universities are centers of innovation and new ideas, and they cannot be allowed to be transformed into laboratories of hatred.”

It further stated, “The right to freedom of speech and expression is a fundamental right.” But any kind of violence, unlawful conduct, or anti-national activity will not be tolerated under any circumstances.” Official sources in the administration told to Media that the investigation into the incident is still in its initial stages and “more details will be added based on the investigation.”
