At least 10 people were killed after a powerful explosion, suspected to have occurred in a Maruti Suzuki Eeco car, near Delhi’s Red Fort. Several others were injured in the explosion, which took place around 7 pm on Monday. The Red Fort car blast triggered a high alert in the national capital and several other cities, including Mumbai and Kolkata.
Officials said that the explosion, which sparked fires in several vehicles nearby, took place when the car slowed and came to a stop at a red traffic light near Gate 1 of the Red Fort metro station.
In a press conference following the blast, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that a Hyundai i20 car exploded at the Subhash Marg traffic signal. Shah stated that the incident was being investigated “taking all possibilities into account” and that the results would be presented to the public.
Shah stated that teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Branch reached the scene within 10 minutes of receiving information. He added that NSG and NIA teams, along with the forensic department, have launched a thorough investigation and all CCTV cameras installed around the scene are being examined.
Following the explosion in a vehicle near the Red Fort in Delhi, a high alert has been issued in Uttar Pradesh, including cities like Ayodhya and Noida, where police are checking drivers in crowded areas and have increased patrolling, news agency PTI reported.
