NMC COVID 19 Relief: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted an additional attempt to eligible MBBS students- those who enrolled in the 2019-20 academic year or later- to pass their ‘First Professional MBBS Examination.’ This one-time special exemption applies to students whose cases are currently pending.

Announced on October 15, this decision aims to relieve eligible students who have been unable to pass the First Professional Examination within the prescribed number of attempts. This exemption applies only to specific cases and should not be construed as a permanent change to examination regulations.

The Commission has clarified that this additional opportunity, termed a ‘mercy attempt,’ will be available only to students who meet the conditions specified in the notification. Before applying to avail of this facility, students should verify their eligibility with their respective medical colleges and the relevant authorities.

While granting this additional opportunity, the NMC has maintained the maximum duration for completing the MBBS course at 10 years from the date of enrollment. This one-time exemption does not alter the overall time limit.

This decision is intended for students who took admission during the academic years mentioned in the notification and are still trying to pass their ‘First Professional MBBS Examination’. The ‘First Professional Examination’ is a critical milestone in the undergraduate medical program; failing to pass it can hinder a student’s academic progress and their advancement to subsequent stages of the course.

This new notice follows previous instances where the Commission provided limited relief to MBBS students who faced difficulties in passing their professional examinations. However, such exemptions depend on the specific circumstances in each case and the eligibility criteria outlined in the relevant notifications.
