IIT Kanpur: Placements at IITs were impacted last year due to the global economic slowdown, especially in the IT industry, which now appears to be easing up. After last year’s slowdown, on-campus recruitments at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have got off to a ‘promising’ start with the start of the placement season.
On Monday, the first day of placement interviews, 579 students received job offers from IIT Kanpur. IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay also said that the number of recruiters visiting campuses this year is higher than last year.
IIT Kanpur is one of the first-generation Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). The first phase of placements at all first-generation IITs begins on December 1 and the impact of the slowdown now appears to be subsiding.
According to officials from IIT Kanpur’s placement cell, 523 students were offered positions on the first day through a combination of campus placements and pre-placement offers (PPOs) from leading companies. A total of 199 students set themselves apart by securing Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) from prominent national and international companies. Adding to the global reputation of the institute, 13 students received international job offers, reflecting the global demand for Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) students.
“This year has started on a positive note,” remarked a representative from the placement cell at IIT Kanpur. In the 2023-24 session, IIT Delhi students received 1,222 job offers, while 741 internship offers were received.
“The excitement for the upcoming session stems from a survey conducted with undergraduate students in August 2024. The survey revealed that only 5 per cent of students are still looking for proper career opportunities. A large portion of these students are Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) scholars seeking post-doctoral research opportunities abroad.
