IIT Campuses: In a significant move towards a flexible, networked academic experience, students from India’s largest engineering institute will be able to study on other IIT campuses for the first time from the 2026-27 academic year, IIT Madras has announced.
Under this initiative, students can pursue specific courses or even spend an entire term at another IIT, with credits easily transferable to their home institute. This is a departure from the rigid, rank-bound pathways, offering a model similar to the Global Exchange Program while remaining connected to the IIT system.

Explaining this initiative, IIT Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti said, “We are mapping the curriculum of various programs across different IITs. Once this match is made, our students from IIT Madras can spend a term at another IIT, or another student from IIT Kanpur, Delhi, or Indore can come to the Madras campus to study some courses and earn credits, which we will transfer to the home institute.”
IIT Madras said, “This is a major step away from rigid, rank-bound pathways to a more flexible, networked academic experience, reflecting the global exchange model while remaining connected to the IIT system.” The institute further said, “With the support and approval of the Academic Dean, this initiative promises greater choice, mobility, and interdisciplinary learning for students at India’s best tech institute.
” With one rank, students can now access multiple IIT campuses, providing unlimited learning opportunities. For the seventh consecutive year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras topped the NIRF 2025 overall rankings, followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore.
