The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has partnered with SBI Life Insurance to establish the ‘Bharat AI and Cyber ​​Innovation Hub for Insurance.’ This joint research and innovation centre aims to develop indigenous artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies for India’s insurance sector.

The collaboration seeks to create AI-based cyber defense systems that are designed, developed, and owned within India. This initiative will support the country’s drive towards technological self-reliance under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) mission.

In a statement, SBI Life noted that India’s insurance premium market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% through 2030. As insurance adoption increases, cybersecurity and the protection of customer data will become increasingly critical.

The innovation hub will conduct research in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, quantum technology, and digital insurance systems. Beyond technology development, the partnership will focus on executive education, talent development, strategic consulting, innovation incubation, and collaborative research between academia and the industry.

A primary objective of this initiative is to build domestic cyber defense capabilities, thereby reducing reliance on imported security frameworks and strengthening India’s institutional capacity to tackle emerging digital threats in the financial sector.

This collaboration will also help create a skilled talent pipeline in AI and cybersecurity, offering students and researchers opportunities to work on real-world industry challenges. IIT Bombay stated that the initiative aims to translate cutting-edge research into deployable technologies while fostering greater collaboration between academia and industry.

The institute further stated that the India Innovation Hub is expected to serve as a model for future partnerships between higher education institutions and regulated industries, thereby fostering research-based innovation and indigenous technology development in key sectors.
