Teachers’ Day 2025: Every year on September 5, India celebrates Teachers’ Day, a tribute to the dedication, wisdom, and influence of teachers who shape lives and futures. The day is also the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, one of India’s greatest scholars, philosophers, and the country’s second President.
Teachers’ Day 2025: Why September 5?
When Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan took over as President in 1962, his students and friends wanted to celebrate his birthday. With his characteristic modesty, he suggested: “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be a matter of pride for me if September 5 is celebrated as Teachers’ Day.”
Since then, the nation has been honoring not just him, but the overall teacher community on this date.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan: The Learned President
Born in 1888 in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan rose from a humble background to become an internationally respected philosopher. He specialised in comparative religion and philosophy and linked Indian thought with Western traditions. His works, such as “The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore” and “Indian Philosophy”, helped the world understand India’s spiritual heritage.
After serving as a teacher at universities including Mysore, Calcutta, Oxford, and Banaras Hindu University, he became Vice President (1952-1962) and then President of India (1962-1967). Despite his high positions, he always saw himself as a teacher, a role he valued above all else.
