Now the Temperature of AC Cannot be Reduced Below 20°C: New Government Rule
By bringing in this rule, the government aims to reduce electricity consumption, specifically during the summer months when the electricity and power consumption is the highest and the demand for AC is also the highest.

Temperature of AC: The Indian government plans to bring in a new rule, according to this rule you can’t lower the ac temperature below 20°C, extreme heat outside is no reason for discount either.
Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar said that, The Government will soon standardize/limit the temperature of AC from 20°C to 28° C. That means going lower than 20°C and higher than 28°C for temperature control will not be an option in upcoming days. The government has never experimented with anything of this sort.
By bringing in this rule, the government aims to reduce electricity consumption, specifically during the summer months when the electricity and power consumption is the highest and the demand for AC is also the highest.
This is not just about ACs in homes; the spectrum here is quite vast. AC’s in hotels and in cars etc., are also to fall under this domain. Many homes keep their AC temperature as low as 16°C, putting extra load on the power grid and also increases the power consumption.
Almost about 6% energy consumption can be cut off if we just increase 1°C AC temperature. That suggests that if we all just set our AC’s temperature only 1 degree higher, we can save about 3 gigawatts of power during peak time-shows studies, Bloomberg quoted it as Agrawal’s saying.
15 million ACs are being installed every year in India; currently there are about 100 million ACs in India.
If there are tighter rules for AC’s usage we could save up to 60 gigawatts of peak demand by 2035, it would save a lot of money which is about RS 7.5 trillion ($88 billion) which would otherwise be used to build new power plants and power grid systems – Bloomberg cited University of California, Berkeley.
Due to increased electricity load, there has been an increase in power cuts and blackouts. With this initiative, there is possibility of fewer Blackouts and power cuts.
