The first phase of the long-awaited Jammu and Kashmir election is underway, with seven districts voting today

Jammu And Kashmir Assembly Election 2024: Voting is being held in 24 of the 90 seats in the state in the first phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The first phase of the long-awaited Jammu and Kashmir election is underway, with seven districts voting today – the first assembly elections after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

Over 23.27 lakh voters – 11.76 lakh men and 11.51 lakh women – are eligible to cast their votes in the first phase, which will see elections in 24 assembly constituencies in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts of Chenab Valley as well as Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian in south Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, September 18, urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to vote in large numbers and strengthen the celebration of democracy. Similarly, Congress general secretary Mallikarjun Kharge, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manohar Sinha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other leaders have called upon the youth, women and first-time voters to exercise their franchise responsibly.

This is the first assembly election in J&K since 2014 and also the first since the repeal of Article 370 in 2019, which gave special status to the erstwhile state. This is also the first time that assembly elections will be held in J&K as a Union Territory. When Article 370 was repealed, the state was also bifurcated into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
