Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express Derails in Odisha, 1 dead, 8 Hospitalised

Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express: One person was killed and several others injured when 11 coaches of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Superfast Express derailed near Nergundi station in Odisha’s Cuttack on Sunday. Cuttack District Collector Dattatreya Bhausaheb Shinde told the media that the deceased passenger was a resident of Alipurduar in West Bengal.

He said eight others have been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment. Most of the injured passengers admitted to the hospital are from West Bengal and Assam. Several other injured were given first aid at the accident site, official sources said. The accident occurred at around 11.54 am, East Coast Railway (ECoR) official sources said.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed concern over the incident and directed officials to restore normalcy as soon as possible. “I am deeply saddened by the derailment of Kamakhya Express near Nergundi station in Cuttack. Thankfully, all passengers are safe. Officials are on the spot, ensuring assistance and restoring normalcy at the earliest. Helplines have been activated for assistance,” Chief Ministry Mohan Majhi tweeted.

ECoR officials said rescue and restoration work is underway under the supervision of senior railway officials. ECoR officials said routes of several trains have been diverted due to the derailment. Railways have arranged a special train to ferry stranded passengers to their destinations.
