Article 370 Repeal: SC May Hear plea Seeking Statehood for J&K. The Supreme Court may hear a plea seeking direction to the Centre to restore statehood to J&K on August 8. According to a Press Trust of India (PTI) report, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan raised the matter before a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran on Tuesday.
Tuesday, August 5, marks the sixth anniversary of the repeal of Article 370 in 2019, which gave special status to J&K.
On December 11, 2023, the Supreme Court of India unanimously affirmed the Centre’s decision to revoke Article 370 and mandated that assembly elections take place in Jammu and Kashmir by September 2024. Additionally, the Supreme Court instructed the Centre to reinstate statehood “as soon as possible”.
