Acquisition to Secure AI Power: Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has announced a major strategic acquisition that could reshape the future of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The tech giant is set to acquire Intersect Power, a U.S. data centre energy and clean-power developer, for $4.75 billion in cash plus assumed debt.
The deal comes as Google grapples with a challenge its CEO, Sundar Pichai, has repeatedly flagged as one of the biggest threats to the rapid expansion of AI: electricity shortages and power constraints. According to Pichai, limitations in energy supply are now a core bottleneck for building and scaling the next generation of AI infrastructure – potentially more urgent than silicon chips or data center space.
Why Energy Matters for AI
As AI models grow in size and complexity, they require massive amounts of computing power housed in data centres. But without reliable, abundant electricity, those centers can’t operate at full capacity. Pichai has openly acknowledged that insufficient power availability could determine which companies – and even which countries – lead in AI and economic growth.
What the Acquisition Does
The Intersect Power deal brings energy generation and data center infrastructure closer together. Instead of relying solely on local grids, Google will be able to co-locate power plants and electricity storage systems directly with future data centers, cutting down on delays and improving reliability. Intersect’s portfolio includes multiple gigawatts of renewable and traditional energy projects already under development.
Intersect will continue to operate under its own brand after the acquisition closes, expected in the first half of 2026, while working closely with Google’s infrastructure teams.
