Google Translate Now Gets an AI Tutor; it Can Now Teach You a New Language
This will put Google Translate in direct competition with apps like Duolingo, which offer language learning courses.

New Delhi: Google is expanding the feature set of the Google Translate app. The app will now use AI to help users learn any language on the platform. This will put Google Translate in direct competition with apps like Duolingo, which offer language learning courses. Unlike traditional language learning apps, Google Translate relies entirely on AI to create courses for the user.
Google Translate As a Language Tutor
First, one needs to tap on the “Practice” button in the app. After this, the user will get the option to select their skill level in the language they want to learn, such as Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced.
Next, the app will ask you for your language learning goals. Users can type in a scenario or choose one of the pre-existing options. The AI will then use this information to create a program tailored to your needs.
Users will get access to listening or speaking exercises, similar to apps like Duolingo. However, the exercises will be based on the pre-selected needs of the course.
Google is launching this feature for Beta testers on Android and iOS starting this week. Currently, it will exclusively offer courses for English speakers to learn Spanish and French. Conversely, speakers of French, Spanish, and Portuguese will have the opportunity to practice English.
Google Translate now doubles as a language tutor, offering practice sessions and live conversation tools powered by Gemini AI. Beta available now (late August 2025), in the U.S., India, and Mexico.

What’s new? Two cool features
1. Practice Mode (AI Tutor)
+ Tap the Practice button in the Translate app.
+ Set your skill level: Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced.
+ Specify your learning goal (for example, “Chat with host family” or “Prepare for a business meeting”).
Gemini AI creates personalized exercises:
+ Listening: Listen to the audio and tap words you recognize.
+ Speaking: Repeat phrases; get hints if you get stuck.
+ Tracks daily progress and adapts as you improve.
2. Live Translation (Real-time conversation)
+ Tap Live Translation, choose languages, speak, get instant audio and transcript translations.
+ Supports over 70 languages, including Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, Tamil, and French. Works in noisy places like airports or cafes.
+ Currently available in the US, India, and Mexico.
Why it Matters:
Google Translate is now more than just a dictionary; it’s an interpreter and teacher at the same time. It challenges giants like Duolingo by offering on-the-go, customized language learning right in the app you already use. Having Translate built in means no additional apps, seamless access, and intuitive UX.
