MBBS UG and PG Medical Seats in India Increased by More than 2 Times in 10 Years
The minister said that 39,489 seats have been introduced for PG medical seats in the last decade from 2014 to 2024.

Sharing the data, the minister said that the total number of MBBS seats in the country has reached 1,08,940 and the number of PG seats has reached 70,674. While it was only 51,348 in 2014, the minister claimed that 57,592 new MBBS seats have been introduced in the last 10 years between 2014 and 2024.

Dr Bharati Praveen Pawar, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, stated in a written response in the Rajya Sabha that a total of 157 government medical colleges have been sanctioned in three stages under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). Out of which 108 are already operational.
Dr. Pawar claimed that the government has increased the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS UG and PG seats. According to data provided by the government, he said there has been an 82 per cent increase in medical colleges, from 387 before 2014 to 706 in 2023. Only last month, Pawar had claimed that MBBS seats had increased to 1,08,848 from 50,000 in 2014.
