United Kingdom Announces 75 Fully Financed Scholarships to Celebrate the Anniversary of India’s Independence.
At the UK-India Week of the India Global Forum in London, Alex Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India, said, “In India’s 75th year, this is a fantastic milestone together.”
In honor of India’s 75th anniversary of independence, the United Kingdom (UK) government on Wednesday announced a collaboration with top Indian companies that would provide 75 fully financed scholarships for Indian students to study in the UK beginning in September.
The available programmes include Chevening scholarships for a one-year Master’s degree in any topic at a university in the United Kingdom. Additionally, there are about 18 scholarships for women in STEM fields offered by the British Council in India, spanning more than 12,000 courses at more than 150 United Kingdom (UK) universities.
The British Council is also providing six English scholarships in addition to this. The amount of fully financed scholarships awarded for the one-year Master’s degree is the greatest to date, according to the UK government. This is a significant milestone as India celebrates its 75th year, said Alex Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India, at the UK-India Week event of the India Global Forum in London.
I am happy to announce 75 scholarships for Indian students to experience the best of the UK, thanks to the outstanding support from our industry partners. According to him, this programme is becoming more diverse since over 30% of Chevening scholars in India originate from smaller cities or are first-generation college students.
HSBC, Pearson India, Tata Sons, Hindustan Unilever, and Duolingo are among the organisations supporting this project to celebrate India’s 75th year of independence. Hitendra Dave, CEO of HSBC, expressed his excitement about the partnership with Chevening for the Chevening HSBC Scholarship programme. “Our goal is to support youth who have the potential to lead and make decisions in their professions by utilising the top-notch educational resources provided by this programme. We feel we have a key role to play in fostering leadership talent in the nation as a British bank with a long history and legacy in India”, he said.
As part of the 75 scholarships, HSBC India will fund 15 of them, Pearson India will fund two, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Sons, and Duolingo will sponsor one each. Since 1983, the UK government has offered 150 countries the Chevening programme, an international rewards programme focused on creating world leaders. With more than 3,500 alumni, India’s Chevening programme is the largest in the world. The fully supported scholarships cover tuition, living expenses, and travel costs for a one-year postgraduate programme. Students must have a minimum of two years of work experience in order to be eligible for the award, and further information will be made available through the Chevening website.
According to the UK government, one of the cornerstones of the diaspora living bridge between the UK and India, which unites people through shared values and affinities, is education. According to the recent official statistics, the number of study visas granted to Indian nationals in the year that ended in March 2022 was approximately 108,000, almost double the number given in the previous year.
