‘Science on Wheels’ for School Students: The ‘Science on Wheels’ initiative is a mobile science education program launched by the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi), in collaboration with Plaksha University and the ‘Igniting Dreams of Young Minds’ (IDYM) Foundation.
An official stated on Monday that the Himachal Pradesh phase of this initiative commenced on October 17 at the IIT Mandi Campus School, with the institute’s Director, Laxmidhar Behera, in attendance. The program is designed for students in grades 6 through 12.
Under this initiative, launched in partnership with Plaksha University and the IDYM Foundation, each participating school will host an interactive learning session lasting approximately six hours. The program covers four core subjects: space technology, robotics, sustainability, and water filtration.
Supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India, the program aims to help students in rural areas understand how scientific concepts taught in the classroom are applied and tested in real-life scenarios.
Having already reached over 7,500 students across 70 schools in Chhattisgarh and Punjab, the initiative now plans to cover 50 schools in the Mandi, Kullu, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kangra districts of Himachal Pradesh.
Following the launch, the team has begun its activities in Mandi, visiting Government Senior Secondary Schools in Badog, Baggi (K), Bari Gumanu, Batheri, and Deori. The director stated that this initiative could help foster an interest in science among children and encourage them to develop futuristic technology in India.
