The Centre informed the Delhi High Court on Wednesday that a re-examination is being conducted for three subjects of the UGC-NET June 2026 exam, including Sociology. This decision follows complaints regarding errors in the question papers.
Taking note of the submission made by Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, who represented the Centre, Justice Jasmeet Singh disposed of a petition filed by a candidate. The candidate had appeared for the Sociology paper on June 30 and had sought an independent inquiry and a stay on the declaration of results pending a re-examination, following allegations of a paper leak.
The Solicitor General informed the High Court that the exams for English and Commerce would be held on September 9, while the Sociology exam would take place on September 10. He stated that the petition no longer survived, as the authorities had already decided to re-conduct the examination.
Justice Jasmeet Singh recorded the law officer’s statement and observed: “In view of the statement made by the Solicitor General, the relief sought in the petition does not survive, and the petition is disposed of.”
NTA had conducted the UGC-NET June 2026 examination across 87 subjects
The National Testing Agency (NTA) had conducted the UGC-NET June 2026 examination across 87 subjects, covering Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), eligibility for Assistant Professor, and admission to PhD programs, between June 22 and June 30.
The SG made this statement at the commencement of the hearing on the petition. The petition had sought a stay on the declaration of results until an independent inquiry was conducted and a re-examination held for the affected subjects if the leak was confirmed.
The petitioner, Aman Singh Yadav, who had appeared for the Sociology paper on June 30, had sought interim relief against the declaration of results. He based his plea on allegations that the question paper had been leaked and commercially circulated just hours before the examination. The petition stated that the petitioner had already informed the NTA about serious errors and the leak regarding the paper, but no response has been received so far.
It also sought directions for an independent CBI or SIT investigation into the alleged leak of the question papers. Standing Counsel Premtosh Mishra represented the CBI. In a public notice, the NTA stated that it had received complaints regarding multiple errors in the question papers for three subjects and that a committee had been constituted to examine these issues.
The NTA is facing renewed criticism over this issue, having previously announced major changes to the examination system.
