Student Protest in Jharkhand: Amidst ongoing protests in Jharkhand, security forces fired tear gas shells on Monday at students marching towards the Legislative Assembly. Earlier, when protesters attempted to break through barricades and advance towards the Assembly, the police used water cannons and resorted to a lathi-charge.
When police used water cannons on a crowd of protesting students in Ranchi, Jharkhand, today, some protesters reacted unexpectedly: they started dancing.
Videos from the student protest site show students rejoicing and dancing even as water cannons were deployed to halt their march towards the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. The Jharkhand Police used water cannons against student protesters who were attempting to breach barricades during a march to lay siege to the Assembly.
Student Protest in Jharkhand Updates
Thousands of JPSC-JSSC aspirants are protesting against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and demanding action from the state government. A senior official from the state’s investigative agency stated that the Jharkhand CID arrested former JPSC Chairman L. Khiangte on Monday in connection with the alleged irregularities in the recruitment exams.
L. Khiangte, who was appointed Chairman of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) in February last year after retiring as the state’s Chief Secretary, had resigned on July 22.
CID Additional Director General (ADG) Manoj Kaushik told PTI, “We have arrested former JPSC Chairman L. Khiangte in connection with irregularities in the recruitment examinations.” L. Khiangte had already been questioned four times since July 28.
This arrest comes a day after the resignation of three JPSC members, amidst massive protests by aspirants over alleged irregularities in the recruitment exams conducted by the commission. With L. Khiangte’s arrest, the total number of individuals arrested by the CID in this case has risen to 20.
He had resigned from the post of JPSC Chairman a day before the CID conducted searches at several locations, including his official residence, in connection with the alleged irregularities. However, L. Khiangte stated that he had “resigned voluntarily” to ensure a fair investigation into the matter.
