Ahead of the NEET UG counselling 2026, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced several changes to the medical admission counselling process. A notice issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed medical counselling officials in all states of the modifications to this year’s undergraduate medical counselling process. The notice stated that the objective of these changes is to make the admission system more transparent, efficient, and convenient for aspiring medical students.
According to the reforms introduced by the committee for the online NEET UG counselling 2026 process, candidates who have been allotted a seat in a counselling round and have opted for an upgrade in subsequent rounds will not be required to physically report to their allotted college.
Their admission will remain valid and will not be cancelled while they participate in the next round. This change in the counselling process brings significant relief to students and parents who previously struggled to make the necessary travel arrangements to reach the allotted institution due to financial constraints or time limitations.
The MCC has introduced an online resignation facility for participating students, allowing them to surrender their allotted seat without having to physically visit the allotted medical institution to resign. Through this online resignation portal, candidates can relinquish their allotted seats within the rules and timelines prescribed by the MCC counselling process.
NEET UG Counselling 2026 Under the NRI Reservation Category
The committee has also introduced changes for candidates planning to participate in the NEET UG counselling 2026 under the NRI reservation category. Students applying for NRI quota seats in deemed medical universities will now be able to upload the required documents online via the counselling portal.
To ensure the smooth implementation of these reforms, the MCC has also organised several training programs for relevant stakeholders and medical institutions during May and June 2026. It has also urged all concerned medical officers to participate in these training sessions to help conduct the counselling process effectively.
The committee has further advised medical officers across states and Union Territories to ensure that information regarding seat availability, institutional fees, and other admission-related details is easily accessible to candidates. Following the declaration of the NEET UG re-exam results earlier this month, the MCC is expected to announce the dates for the upcoming NEET UG 2026 counselling process.
