Exam Reforms: In a video statement today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a task force, led by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, would deliberate on ways to improve India’s examination systems and submit a report to the government. Speaking in Hindi in a video posted on ‘X’, PM Modi stated that based on that report, “measures will be taken to ensure the credibility of future examinations.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Friends, the Government of India is taking continuous steps for the bright future of students. People who played with the students future are rotting in jail. We have created fast-track courts. We are also moving forward to bring a new law with tough legal provisions in Parliament.”
This announcement comes a day after protests regarding exam paper leaks, led by the satirical political group ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP), concluded following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. “But we must think about the future. Our examination system needs to be reliable and transparent, and it must now make maximum use of technology.
Decided to Constitute a High-level Task Force to Focus on Exam Reforms
PM Narendra Modi stated, “Considering all these aspects, a decision has been made to constitute a high-level task force to focus on exam reforms, to be led by world-renowned technology expert Nandan Nilekani.”
“And, based on its report, steps will be taken as soon as possible to ensure the credibility of future examinations.”
Apart from Nilekani, the task force comprises experts from various fields. They will assist in improving the country’s examination systems, particularly through technological integration and structural reforms.
Other members include S. Somanath (former Chairman, ISRO), Tapan Deka (former Director, Intelligence Bureau), V. Kamakoti (Director, IIT Madras), Anita Kaul (former Education Secretary), and Amrit Lal Meena (logistics expert).
As a co-founder of the eGov Foundation, Nilekani has played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s mission to enhance urban governance through technology. He focuses on creating citizen-centric platforms that equip urban local bodies with the tools necessary to deliver better services and improve the quality of life for citizens.
With over two decades of experience in leadership roles, including serving as the founding Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Nilekani possesses deep expertise in leveraging technology to create large-scale impact.
Another organization co-founded by him, the EkStep Foundation, aims to improve basic literacy and numeracy skills for millions of children through a digital platform. Nilekani holds a bachelor’s degree from IIT Bombay and has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan and the Joseph Schumpeter Prize.
