Delhi High Court allows Sonam Wangchuk to be Moved to a Private Hospital During Hunger Strike

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court ordered that scientist and activist Sonam Wangchuk be transferred immediately from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike for a long time regarding the NEET paper leak.

The Delhi High Court also directed that Wangchuk be treated by doctors at Medanta Hospital in accordance with established medical protocols, noting that following his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital, the activist must adhere to the medical advice of the treating team.

This court ruling followed a challenge filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, against a single-judge order that had denied permission for his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital.

During the hearing, the Centre informed the Delhi High Court that it had “no objection” to shifting. The Centre told the High Court during the hearing that they have “no objection” to taking Sonam Wangchuk to Medanta Hospital, but requested that he be kept under constant medical watch.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated, “The Centre has no objection to shifting Sonam Wangchuk to Medanta Hospital,” but urged that Wangchuk “remain under constant medical monitoring and not be discharged without the advice of Medanta’s doctors.”

The bench also suggested transferring Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital with all his medical records, stating that a formal order would be issued after the lunch break.

Tuesday marked the 24th consecutive day of Wangchuk’s hunger strike, while the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP Party) intensified its protest against the Centre over the NEET 2026 paper leak and reiterated its demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Protesters also returned to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where the sit-in continued for another day. CJP party founder Abhijit Dipke joined group members at the protest site, as the group pledged to continue the agitation until their demands were met.
