Studying abroad is a dream for many Indian students, but the IELTS exam often proves to be a major hurdle. This language test can delay admission plans, as it entails months of preparation and steep exam fees. Studying abroad without IELTS is becoming a practical option for 2026, as many universities now accept alternative methods to demonstrate English language proficiency.

Many institutions across Europe, North America, and Australia allow students to apply using a ‘Medium of Instruction’ (MOI) certificate, internal language assessments, or records of prior English-medium education.

A) Germany

It is one of the most preferred destinations because many public universities accept the Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate for select English-medium courses. This option is available for certain programs at the University of Siegen, the University of Kaiserslautern, and RWTH Aachen.

Studying in Germany

Germany provides world-class education at public universities for both local and foreign students with almost no tuition fees. To begin, you must choose a program, verify language requirements (IELTS/TOEFL or German proficiency), acquire an APS certificate (if applying from India), and deposit money into a blocked account.

B) France

France is also a good option; business schools such as NEOMA Business School, KEDGE Business School, and Paris School of Business prioritise prior English-medium education or an interview over IELTS scores.

France is becoming an increasingly popular and affordable destination for Indian students, offering over 1,700 English-taught programs and a two-year post-study work visa. Tuition fees at public universities range from €2,500 to €4,000 per year, and the application process must be completed through the official ‘Campus France India’ portal.

C) Canada

In Canada, IELTS waivers are limited but can be obtained through specific colleges, pathway programs, or language bridge courses.

To study in Canada, it is mandatory to secure admission to a ‘Designated Learning Institution’ (DLI), obtain a ‘Provincial Attestation Letter’ (PAL), and provide proof, via the IRCC study permit portal, of sufficient funds to cover living expenses (such as CAD 22,895 for a ‘Guaranteed Investment Certificate’).

D) UK

Some UK universities, such as the University of Greenwich, Birmingham City University, and the University of Portsmouth, may offer conditional admission without IELTS.

The UK offers accelerated degree programs for Indian students, featuring three-year bachelor’s and one-year master’s courses. Popular fields of study include business, engineering, computer science, law, and data science. Students are permitted to work up to 20 hours a week during their studies and can pursue post-study work opportunities.

E) Netherlands

Students can also consider the Netherlands, where specific programs at institutions like HAN University of Applied Sciences, Saxion University, and the University of Groningen may accept alternative proof of English proficiency.

Studying in the Netherlands is highly popular among Indian students due to the availability of over 2,100 English-taught programs, world-renowned universities, and a one-year “orientation year” visa post-graduation. However, it requires significant preparation, as annual expenses range from approximately ₹15-30 lakh, and planning is essential due to the nationwide housing shortage.

Ireland and Australia also offer such opportunities to eligible students through specific institutions and pathway programs.

Study Abroad

Studying abroad involves finding the right international program, meeting academic and English proficiency requirements, arranging finances, and securing a visa. Depending on your background and profile, the preparation and admission process can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months.
