Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, has declared a state of emergency following two powerful earthquakes in the country. These quakes caused buildings to collapse in the capital, Caracas, and sparked panic among the population.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, and exactly one minute later, an even stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the country. The second earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometres, and its epicentre was located 16 kilometres (10 miles) southwest of Morón. These are among the most powerful earthquakes to hit Venezuela in over a century.
