Renowned IIT: After one or two years of preparation, coaching classes, mock tests, sleepless nights, and navigating one of the world’s toughest entrance examinations, a JEE Advanced qualifier might feel that the arduous phase is finally over. In reality, a different kind of challenge has only just begun.
Consider, for instance, a student who has always dreamed of studying Computer Science Engineering (CSE). When the JoSAA counselling portal opens, they may discover that they face a choice between pursuing Computer Science Engineering at a newer IIT or opting for a traditional branch, such as Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering, at an older and renowned IIT with a much stronger reputation.

Competition for Computer Science Engineering seats at the older IITs is fierce, and these coveted spots typically go to the country’s top-ranked candidates.
Another student might weigh the brand value of IIT Bombay against the opportunity to pursue their preferred branch elsewhere. Yet another might compare the strength of the faculty, research opportunities, start-up culture, placement records, campus life, and even hostel amenities.
For the rest, the JoSAA counselling season often becomes a period of compromise: Is it better to pursue the subject you have always wanted to study, or to secure admission to a more prestigious IIT, renowned for its brand, alumni network, and placements, and hope that the institution’s reputation will open new doors for you later on?
For the 56,880 candidates who qualified for JEE Advanced 2026, the coming weeks will be filled with precisely these kinds of decisions. It is no longer merely a question of, “Can I get into an IIT?” but rather, “Which IIT, and at what cost?”
Figures Behind the Competition
This pressure is clearly visible when the number of available seats and the number of students are placed opposite each other.
| Particulars | Number |
|---|---|
| Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) | 23 |
| IIT undergraduate seats (approx.) | 18,591 |
| JEE Advanced 2026 qualified candidates | 56,880 |
Seats By Renowned IIT:
| IIT | Seats | NIRF Ranking 2025 |
| IIT Madras | 1120 | #1 |
| IIT Delhi | 1239 | #2 |
| IIT Bombay | 1360 | #3 |
| IIT Kanpur | 1100 | #4 |
| IIT Kharagpur | 1900 | #5 |
| IIT Roorkee | 1350 | #6 |
| IIT Hyderabad | 630 | #7 |
| IIT Guwhati | 960 | #8 |
Even among the students who have cleared JEE Advanced, the majority will ultimately opt for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and other institutions, as the number of seats available in the IITs is insufficient.
