Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently issued a blunt warning to software engineers and tech industry leaders regarding the future of software development: the era of traditional coding is now officially over.

Speaking at an industry conference organised by the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), Eric Schmidt emphasised the rapid advancements made by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it has fundamentally transformed the way software is built. 1. A Direct Message: “Stop. It’s Over Now.”

Eric Schmidt noted that a massive yet quiet shift occurred in AI capabilities late last year, significantly accelerating the operational speed of AI coding systems. His warning to developers was direst: “If you are writing code using any traditional method, stop. It’s over now.” He stated that if engineers are still writing code in the same way they were just six months ago, their workflow is now outdated.

2. From “Writing Code” to Becoming “Architects of Intent”

Recalling his younger days, Eric Schmidt recounted that when he was 20, writing software single-handedly, one line at a time, he felt like “the most brilliant person in the world.” However, he also acknowledged that today’s AI tools have completely blown him away; for top-tier developers, writing syntax manually has now become a thing of the past. Instead of typing out every single line of code themselves, top-level programmers are now shifting toward a “Sleep-and-Build” model.

He gave the example of a startup founder who writes specific requirements and rigorous test cases for a piece of software at 7 PM, and then goes to sleep. By 4 AM, the AI ​​has already built and tested the software, a task that previously would have taken 10 Google engineers six months to complete.

3. A Massive Surge in Productivity

Eric Schmidt argued that software development has long been one of the global economy’s most significant bottlenecks, as it demands an immense amount of time and human effort. AI is now eliminating this bottleneck. Under this new paradigm, a single developer, leveraging AI, can now build highly complex and powerful applications that previously required large-scale engineering departments.

Workflows are shifting away from tedious debugging and repetitive tasks, moving instead toward high-level system design, security architecture, and defining what constitutes “good” software.

4. A Warning for Business Leaders and SaaS Companies

Eric Schmidt urged company managers to challenge their engineering teams and ask them, “Why are you still writing code the same way you did six months ago?” He warned that this shift would trigger massive disruption in the market.

Because AI has made it incredibly easy, fast, and inexpensive to build applications entirely from scratch, many existing software products and traditional Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies face the looming threat of becoming obsolete. To ensure their survival, tech companies must immediately pivot toward AI-based workflows.
