UPSC CSE 2026 Attempt Limits, Notification: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has introduced significant changes to the attempt limits and eligibility criteria for candidates already in the civil services. Moving beyond the standard restrictions of previous years, the Civil Services Examination (Prelims) 2026 notification announces expanded limitations specifically targeting those already serving in the Indian Administrative, Police, and Foreign Services.

Under these revised rules, the UPSC has clarified when currently serving officers in the IPS or other Group A services, including the IAS and IFS, will be barred from appearing in subsequent examination cycles. These updates aim to streamline service allocation and prevent the practice popularly referred to as ‘vacancy hoarding’ by candidates already holding top positions.

On Wednesday, the Union Public Service Commission released the detailed recruitment notification for the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination 2026 (UPSC CSE 2026). Eligible candidates can apply online through the official UPSC portal upsc.gov.in, with the last date for application submission set as February 24.

This examination will be conducted across India to recruit candidates for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and other Group A and Group B services. According to the notification, a total of 933 vacancies will be filled through CSE 2026, compared to 979 vacancies notified last year and 1,105 positions filled the year before.

Who will be ineligible to appear for UPSC CSE 2026 after appointment to the IAS, IPS, or IFS?

Along with the notification, the UPSC has imposed certain restrictions on eligibility, with the IPS emerging as a key focus group. According to the 2026 notice, candidates who have been appointed to the IAS or IFS based on a previous examination and are currently serving as members of that service will not be eligible to appear for UPSC CSE 2026.
