These 780 medical colleges are spread across the country. Pradesh tops the list when it comes to MBBS seat availability with 12,325 seats, followed by Maharashtra (11,844 seats), Tamil Nadu (12,000 seats), Karnataka (12,194 seats), and Telangana (8,915 seats). Other states with significant seat allocations include Gujarat (7,000 seats), Rajasthan (6,279 seats), and Andhra Pradesh (6,585 seats).

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through notices issued in response to questions raised in the Lok Sabha on 1 August 2025, presented a comprehensive overview of the progress and challenges of India’s medical education sector in the last five years. The reply highlighted major developments such as a significant increase in MBBS seats, improvements in infrastructure under NMC, vacant seat trends, and measures for fee regulation in private medical colleges.

These initiatives reflect the Government’s continued efforts to make medical education more accessible, equitable, and in line with the emerging healthcare needs of the country.
