Devajit Saikia Elected BCCI Secretary and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia Elected Treasurer
The elections were necessitated after Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar had to step down from their posts for various reasons.
The unopposed election of Devajit Saikia and Prabhtej Singh as secretary and treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was formally concluded during the Board of Control for Cricket in India Special General Meeting (SGM) on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
There was no need for ballot vote as Devajit Saikia, who is the current joint secretary, and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, who has previously served as councillor, were the only candidates in their respective categories. Election officer A.K. Jothi formally appointed the two as office bearers at the SGM that lasted for 10 minutes.
The elections were necessitated after Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar had to step down from their posts for various reasons. Shah had resigned on November 30 before assuming office as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman on December 1, Shelar had to step down soon after taking oath as a minister in the Maharashtra Cabinet last month.
The BCCI will now have to hold elections for the joint secretary post in the next 45 days, with Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) vice-president Sanjay Naik being the frontrunner to fill the post by the AGM later this year. Saikia played four Ranji Trophy games for Assam in 1990-91. However, he has had a stellar career since stepping into the Assam Cricket Association in 2016. He has played a key role in developing the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
