Goa Liberation Day 2025: Today, December 19th, is a historic date, marking the liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule. Our state of Goa was under colonial rule for over 450 years. Brave warriors and freedom fighters fought valiantly and liberated Goa on December 19, 1961. Operation Vijay was launched to bring the Goa territory into the Indian Union. December 19, 2025, will be celebrated as the 64th anniversary of this historic event.

People commemorate this day by remembering the brave Indian armed forces and the warriors who fought for freedom. In 1961, Portugal finally relinquished Goa, along with Daman and Diu, and it officially became part of India.

Goa Liberation Day 2025: The Long Road to Freedom

When the rest of India gained independence in 1947, Goa remained under Portuguese rule. Portugal refused to recognize India’s sovereignty over the territory and held onto Goa, Daman, and Diu as its overseas territories. For the people of Goa, this meant continued colonial control, political repression, and restrictions on basic freedoms. The resistance began long before 1961.

It took many forms: underground movements, civil disobedience, protests, and armed struggle. Ordinary citizens, students, teachers, labourers, and clergy quietly became freedom fighters. Many faced imprisonment, torture, or exile. Some never returned home.

Goa Liberation Day: Honouring the Freedom Fighters behind Goa’s Independence

T.B. Cunha – Known as ‘Father of Goan Nationalism ‘, this brave man was the one who took the first step to end the Portuguese rule in Goa. When T.B. Cunha returned to India after completing his studies in France, he decided that Goa should be a part of the freedom struggle too. With this vision, he founded the Goa Congress Committee and succeeded in getting Goa affiliated with the Indian National Congress.

Juliao Menezes – Juliao Menezes was a freedom fighter, who got actively involved in spreading nationalism amidst the people of Goa. He worked with Socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia in planning a Civil Disobedience Movement against the regime of Portuguese ruler Antonio de Oliveira Salazar in Goa.

Vaman Sardasai – He was an indian poet, diplomat and freedom fighter who contributed in radio station – Voice of Freedom. He became the 2nd Editor of Goa Today’s Magazine. And he was also awarded the Padma Shri award.

Libia Lobo Sardesai – She was a Goan Lawyer who operated an underground radio station, Voice of Freedom. It broadcast, spread the messages and support across Portuguese-ruled Goa. After the Goa Liberation, she became the first Director of Goa, Daman, and Diu. She was awarded the Padma Shri award.

Purushottam Kakodkar – He was the man who built an Ashram to provide shelter and support to the freedom fighters. After Goa’s Liberation, he became the head of the newly formed Goa unit of the Indian National Congress.

Goa Liberation Day: Operation Vijay and December 19, 1961

After years of unsuccessful negotiations and growing unrest, the Indian government launched Operation Vijay in December 1961. The Indian Army entered Goa, Daman, and Diu, bringing an end to 451 years of Portuguese rule. On December 19, Goa officially gained independence.

This day marked the end of colonial rule and the beginning of Goa’s journey as a part of democratic India. For many freedom fighters, it was the moment they had awaited their entire lives.
