The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued ‘Letters of Permission’ (LoP) to establish two new medical colleges in Bihar: Government Medical College, Chhapra (Saran), and Ram Janaki Medical College and Hospital, Samastipur. Admissions for 50 MBBS seats annually will commence at each of these colleges starting from the 2026-27 academic year.
Earlier, applications had been submitted to the NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) seeking approval for these two new medical colleges, each proposing an annual intake of 100 MBBS seats. Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for granting approval to these colleges.
Ram Janaki Medical College and Hospital in Samastipur and Government Medical College in Chhapra (Saran) have now received approval to admit 50 MBBS students each, starting from the 2026-27 academic session. The Deputy Chief Minister stated, “This decision is a significant step towards expanding medical education in Bihar, strengthening healthcare facilities, and creating new opportunities for the youth.”
The start of MBBS classes at these colleges will allow students from the Samastipur and Chhapra districts to pursue medical studies close to home. The operationalisation of these colleges is expected to increase the availability of specialised doctors, ensuring better healthcare and treatment for patients. This decision is crucial for Bihar’s medical education sector, and it is anticipated that the number of MBBS seats will increase further in the future.
