Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur: The Innovate4NPS Hackathon 2026, a national innovation initiative jointly organised by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), has successfully concluded at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) campus. The event gathered innovators, startups, and technology professionals with the main goal of strengthening India’s pension ecosystem.
The hackathon’s theme was ‘Digital Trust and Technological Innovation’ within the pension ecosystem, aiming to foster practical solutions for the future of the National Pension System (NPS). Organisers explained that this initiative was started at a time when India is seeing continuous demographic shifts; therefore, planning for retirement and ensuring long-term financial security for the nation’s growing elderly population has become even more vital.

During the final ‘Pitch Day,’ the chosen teams put forward their concepts to a panel made up of policymakers, industry veterans, and domain experts. The assessment process is mainly centered on aspects like scalability, regulatory compliance, behavioural finance, and user trust, areas deemed crucial for transforming pension distribution via digital systems.
Attendees addressed various issues concerning the digital pension infrastructure. This involved optimising onboarding and KYC for NPS subscribers, creating predictive retirement planning tools, offering AI help in many languages, and developing awareness platforms to increase pension uptake among diverse groups in society.
The organisers stated that the aim of this hackathon was not just to organize a competition, but to establish a platform capable of linking academic research, policy priorities, and startup-based innovation. SIIC, located at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), offered mentorship and technical guidance to support teams in developing ideas that could be successfully applied in real-world scenarios.
The officials involved in this initiative reported that digital innovation will be key to broadening pension reach and bettering the customer experience in the coming years. It is anticipated that many of the chosen solution proposals will receive further assistance for developing prototypes, and potentially, for additional incubation (business development).
The successful wrap-up of Innovate4NPS is another key step toward boosting collaboration between regulators and academic innovation hubs, a partnership focused on tackling public financial issues effectively using tech solutions.
