1. Know the Major Entrance Exams

+ CAT (Common Admission Test) → Main gateway for IIMs and many top institutes.

+ XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) → XLRI, XIMB, and others.

+ GMAT/GRE → Used by ISB and some IIMs (for one-year executive MBA like IIM PGPX, EPGP).

+ Others → SNAP (SIBM), NMAT (NMIMS), TISSNET (HR).

Since you have time, you can prepare strategically for CAT 2025/XAT 2026 for admission in the 2026 session.

2. Check Your Eligibility

Before any other process, make sure you meet the basic criteria of CAT, XAT, and other MBA entrance exams. You must have a graduation degree with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD). Final year students can also apply.

3. Understand the Admission Deadlines

CAT 2025 will be held on November 30, 2025, and the results will be declared in January 2026. After this, IIMs and other B-schools will start the shortlisting, interview, and admission process between January and May 2026. Knowing this deadline will help you plan your preparation and application easily.

4. Register for at Least the CAT and XAT Exams

Do not delay registration. The last date to apply for the CAT exam is September 13, 2025. The CAT application process is also ongoing at iimcat.ac.in. Completing the registration early gives you peace of mind and allows you to fully focus on preparation.

5. Develop a Study Plan and Skills Before the MBA Study

With less than 3 months left for the CAT and 4 months for the XAT exam, you need a focused plan. Divide your time between Quant, VARC, and DILR and set weekly targets. Even if you are a beginner, with consistent effort, you can learn the basics in 6-8 weeks.

+ Quant and Logical Reasoning: A strong base of Maths helps in CAT.

+ Business Awareness: Read newspapers (TOI, The Hindu, ET, Mint) + Magazines (Business Standard, HBR).

+ Communication: Practice GD (Group Discussion) + PI (Personal Interview) in advance.

6. Work on Weak Areas

Don’t just revise the topics you are already good at. Identify your weak areas, such as reading comprehension, arithmetic, or logical puzzles, and practice extra on those areas. MBA preparation is a long journey. Avoid burnout by maintaining a balance between study, revision, and rest. Consistency matters more than last-minute cramming. Think of CAT preparation as a marathon, not a sprint.

7. Improve Communication Skills and be Persistent

Remember, CAT is only the first step of MBA Study. After the exam, you will have to go through Group Discussion (GD), Written Ability Test (WAT), and Personal Interview (PI). Start developing communication skills right now by reading newspapers, practicing speaking, and improving fluency in English.

8. Take Mock Tests

Mock tests are essential for success. Start by taking 1-2 mock tests every week, analyzing your mistakes, and focusing on improvement. As the exam approaches, take full-duration mock tests to increase speed and stamina.

9. Make a List of Your Target B-schools

Apart from IIMs, also look at top institutes like XLRI (XAT exam), FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR Mumbai, and IIT Management Schools. Check their cut-offs, fees, and placement details beforehand so that you can set realistic targets.

10. Keep Checking for Updates

Stay updated on the official website iimcat.ac.in for changes in the exam pattern, admit card release, and other announcements. Missing even a single update can ruin your entire year. By following these steps, you will be ready to give your best in CAT 2025 and secure a seat in your dream business school.
