Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned the United States against pressuring India to stop buying Russian oil, saying New Delhi would never allow itself to be humiliated in front of anyone. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Group in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, Putin said, “Will India give up our energy resources?
If so, it will incur certain losses. Estimates vary; some say it could be around $9-10 billion. But if it doesn’t refuse, sanctions will be imposed, and the loss will be the same. So why refuse if it also carries domestic political costs?
According to ANI, President Putin said, “Indian citizens will not allow themselves to be humiliated by anyone. I know Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and he will not take any such decision.” PTI reported that the Russian President said, “The losses incurred by India due to the tariffs imposed by the US will be compensated by importing crude oil from Russia, and this will further strengthen India’s position as an independent country.” Putin praised Prime Minister Modi, calling him a “balanced, wise, and dedicated leader.”
Before this statement, US President Donald Trump had urged Europe, India, and China to stop buying Russian oil to reduce the “financial support” Moscow receives for its conflict in Ukraine. Putin also said that India and Russia have a “special” relationship. “I think the people of India should not forget this and our relationship. About 15 years ago, we declared a special strategic partnership, and that is the best description. Prime Minister Modi is a very wise leader who thinks first about his country,” the news agency ANI quoted Putin as saying, citing Russia Today.
The Russian leader warned that a cut in Russian energy supplies would cause severe damage to the global economy, potentially pushing oil prices above $100 per barrel. He emphasized the importance of resolving trade and payment issues with New Delhi, saying that the matter could be resolved through BRICS or other channels. Commenting on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin said, “All NATO countries are fighting against us, and they are not hiding it anymore. Unfortunately, there are instructors in Ukraine, and they are actually participating in the war. A special center was created in Europe, and it basically supports all the actions carried out by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
It provides information, sends intelligence from space, supplies weapons, and provides training.” Blaming Europe for the continuation of the war, Putin stated that Russia is grateful to the BRICS countries and the Arab states, as well as its allies North Korea and Belarus, for their peace efforts. These remarks came during a lengthy address in which Putin also commented on Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, the supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, and the instability in the global energy market.
