Pakistan Seeks to Mediate Talks Between USA and Iran in Islamabad

Talks Between USA and Iran in Islamabad: People familiar with the matter stated that Pakistan is attempting to mediate talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. To this end, its powerful Army Chief has spoken by phone with President Donald Trump in an effort to find a resolution to this animosity.

These individuals noted that Field Marshal Asim Munir spoke with Trump on Monday. They provided this information on the condition of anonymity, as the conversation was private. One of these individuals mentioned that Pakistan is offering Islamabad as a venue for these discussions.

A senior Western diplomat indicated that if the prospect of an agreement arises, Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, could travel to Islamabad alongside USA Vice President JD Vance. The individual further noted that the USA had also considered locations such as Muscat, Doha, and Cairo for peace talks; however, due to deteriorating relations stemming from the conflict, or a lack of trust by either Washington or Tehran in the respective host governments, these alternatives appeared less viable.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated: “Based on the mutual consent of the USA and Iran, Pakistan stands ready to host meaningful and decisive talks aimed at a comprehensive resolution to this ongoing conflict, and considers it an honor to facilitate this process.”

On Monday, Trump announced that he had called off strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure following “meaningful discussions” with the Islamic Republic. Iranian officials, thus far, have denied that any talks are currently underway. Citing a senior official within Iran’s Foreign Ministry (who remained unnamed), CBS News reported that Iranian officials are reviewing messages conveyed by the US through intermediaries.

Pakistan Were to Mediate and Host Talks

Tahir Andrabi, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, did not respond to a request for comment on the matter. “It would come as no particular surprise if Pakistan were to mediate and host talks,” said Michael Kugelman, a senior fellow at the Washington-based think tank, the Atlantic Council. “It is one of the select few countries that enjoys good relations with both Washington and Tehran, and it has engaged in close and frequent dialogue with senior officials from both capitals over the past year.

” Pakistan is leveraging its close ties with the Trump administration while also drawing upon its long-standing relationships with its neighbor, Iran, and other key nations such as Saudi Arabia. On Monday, Sharif spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing solidarity with Iran and appealing for a de-escalation of tensions.

In a post on X, Sharif stated, “Sharing details of the diplomatic efforts being undertaken by Pakistan’s leadership with the Iranian President, the Prime Minister assured the Iranian leadership that Pakistan would continue to play its constructive role in fostering peace in the region.”
